Gallery University Stellenbosch (GUS) is the art gallery of Stellenbosch University and has, since 2014, been managed by the Department of Visual Arts. GUS primarily hosts work by the students and staff of the Visual Art department, including exhibitions reflecting our teaching & learning programme, as well as invited guest artists whose work compliments said programme.

The gallery offers several interlinked exhibition spaces in the heart of Stellenbosch’s historical town centre that attracts both destination visitors and daily pedestrian passers-by. With the help of a dedicated group of student volunteers and a network of supporters, GUS continues to develop its reputation as a space where art students, art lovers, and the art-curious can visit free exhibitions of the highest calibre, which offer an insight into artistic practice as a mode of intellectual enquiry.

With an increasing focus on African Art around the world, Eclectica Contemporary aims to present a carefully selected and focused collection of art from the continent that interrogates the issues facing us in a globalized world. The art at Eclectica often shows practices and materials familiar from art history but which push these boundaries and explore uncharted territories of representation, technique and theory.

Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Eclectica Contemporary sees itself as an African gallery with an international vision. We celebrate the diversity and depth of art making on our continent while aiming to contextualize this for a growing global market.

Our program of exhibitions shows a mix of solo shows by gallery artists alongside curated group shows. In addition, the Eclectica Contemporary exhibition space has facilities for experimental, new media and project-based works.

Driven by a fascination with the fluidity of the future as it is created by each decision we make, Mies’s practice in the studio is marked by spontaneity and a deep exploration of emotions. Her artworks become visual narratives that reflect the complexity of the human experience and invite viewers to embark on their own introspective journeys.

In her pursuit of artistic innovation, Mies fearlessly experiments with various tools and materials. Alongside brushes, mops, and palette knives, she embraces unconventional methods, including the use of a credit card, to create unexpected textures and layers. Paint is applied, rinsed from the canvas, let dry and in some cases sanded off again. This experimentation results in a truly unique visual language that sets her apart, and that evolves ever so gently as time passes.
