6 Spin Street Restaurant Gallery is situated in a beautiful Sir Herbert Baker building facing historic Church Square. It is a restaurant, event and gallery space, exhibiting solo and group shows
Albie Bailey presents Art on Paper, an exhibition of 26 works in which artists have used a variety of media and techniques to create beguiling images.
Included are Colbert Mashile, Robert Hodgins, Solomon Siko and Selwin Pekeur. Clementina van der Walt is represented by ink drawings inspired by Istanbul, as well as a work in charcoal and pastel. Silkscreens by 5 artists explore the theme of brandy at the Cape: Nicolaas Maritz, Lien Botha, Siko, Pekeur and Louis Janse van Vuuren. The expressive contemporary art produced by the artists of the Kuru project remains remarkable in its originality. Thamae Setshogo (who died in 2004), Qwaa Mangana (one of the first in the Kuru Art Project) and Xgaoc'o X'are (signing his Naro name as Qhaqhoo) are among those represented.
Recalling both the recent jazz and swing dance festivals, Sam Nhlengethwa's striking Ode to Thelonius Monk greets one as you enter the exhibition. As with jazz musicians like Monk, Nhlengethwa has been allowed freedom of expression by skilful use of the technique in this hand-printed lithograph.
The exhibition is on at 6 Spin Street Restaurant Gallery until 4th May.
