Thursdays Projects in collaboration with A11 is super happy to invite you to the launch of Half Fool – a hopefully regular, little takkie-squeaker. Join us for a few beers and laps on the dance floor to semi-officially celebrate 5 years and 1 month of First Thursdays Cape Town (and to officially wish 2017 a very goodbye!)
Tickets are available here!
“TB Under the Microscope” is a collaborative exhibition between scientists and social scientists. As part of the greater collective of ‘Swallowing the World: A Multidisciplinary Curatorial Project on Tuberculosis (TB) in South Africa’, this project arises from the desire to share scientific research on TB with the broader public. Through collaboration with a number of scientific researchers from the Department of Science and Technology - National Research Foundation (DST-NRF) Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Tuberculosis Research and the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) Centre for Tuberculosis Research, the body of work consists of enlarged microscopic images of Mycobacterium tuberculosis – the bacteria that causes the disease, Tuberculosis.
These images – familiar to some, strange to most – allow the viewer to enter into another world that would not be possible without the aid of technology; and allow the public to enter the realm of the ‘scientist’. Through the exhibition, we hope to bridge the gap between inside and outside the laboratory by bringing scientists, social scientists and the broader public into conversation about TB and the work that scientists are doing to understand the bacteria that causes this illness. This project is made possible by the generous funding of the Wellcome Trust.
TB Under the Microscope will initially feature at First Thursdays on December 7th from 17:00 to 20:00, at 6 Spin Street Restaurant Gallery. At this time, some of the collaborators will be present to discuss the work. The official opening night will take place on Saturday 9th December at 18:30, at 6 Spin Street Restaurant Gallery. Here, all key collaborators and scientists will be available and eager to engage on the project and the images. ThisSaturday opening night will also feature an installation through which the public can further interact with the science behind these works. The exhibition will run from Friday 8th to Friday 15th December, between 9:00 and 18:00.
