Chandler House is a small design studio and shop located in the heart of Cape Town’s bustling CBD. The 18th century Cape Georgian building houses both the Voorkamer Gallery and the shop itself. Monthly exhibitions take place in the Voorkamer Gallery whilst the shop is filled with locally-made homeware, artisanal gifts, antiques, textiles and a wide selection of fine art.
Chandler House is the brainchild of Michael Chandler who opened the shop doors in December of 2013. What began as a platform for showcasing his designs soon grew to include other Cape artists and makers.
2018 will always be remembered as the Year of Water, or lack thereof. The water crisis speaks of the way in which the world is changing and the call for us to change our habits, too. It has its silver lining though; it has brought people together, highlighted the differences between groups of people and encouraged domestic users to change their daily habits.
Throughout history, cultures from all over the world have performed ritualistic dances to invoke rain. As we approach the end of the rope, we need to look beyond desalination plants and tapping underground aquifers for an eleventh solution to the crisis. We are therefore hosting ‘Rain Dance’, a joyful, hopeful and experimental exhibition to encourage the rains to fall, should there be any truth to this ancient cultural practice.
We are celebrating artworks that celebrate the positive aspects of water, precipitation, waterfalls, rivers, clouds, streams, tears of joy, emotional subconscious experiences, aquatic creates both scientific and mythological.
Let it rain!
