Thomarts Gallery is a contemporary art space that is situated in the historic District Six, Zonnebloem, Cape Town.
The gallery occupies a unique niche in the art world and has become a part of the awareness of African art, to elevate recognition and create opportunities for deserving African artists.
COLLABORURALATION is an in-house coined name for “Collaboration with rural-based creatives,” a successful project initiated by Thomarts Gallery to support and uplift rural communities into creative economies. The collaboration was executed during the isolations of COVID-19, both in Mpumalanga and Johannesburg. The project dually enhanced the creatives’ works into a contemporaneous DNA that befits Thomarts (contemporary art) Gallery.
Inspired by the diaspora of languages, and how the context changes against another language, the artists collaborated on 26 artworks of which had a letter of the alphabet. As language evolves, some of the letters are either translated, disposed of, and/or distorted just as the fading of languages to slang and away from natural meaning. Language has an inclusivity that binds, thus the project itself had to be both rural and semi-urban inclusive.
Each individual artwork, framed, measures a 146cm x 176 cm and are executed in panaromic format and potrait format exclusively.
To celebrate the groundbreaking opening of the show, Thomarts Gallery will run a discount of 25% off the wall price per artwork, in a bid to enhance a new or seasoned art collector’s collection. Collaboruralation is an invigoration of a fresh aura of energy and colour.
