“Violence against women is perhaps the most shameful human rights violation, and it is perhaps the most pervasive. It knows no boundaries of geography, culture or wealth. As long as it continues, we cannot claim to be making real progress towards equality, development and peace.” – Kofi Annan
Violence against women is a serious problem in South Africa. Our statistics don’t lie – according to Statistics South Africa there’s been a 117% increase in the murder rate of women, and a 53% growth in the number of sexual offences against women. It is safe to say that there’s no ignoring this growing pandemic.
As part of 16 Days of Activism, an international campaign that opposes violence against women and fights for their right to be heard, we are joining hands with the community and invite you to join the dialogue and participate in practical demonstrations that will arm you with confidence and capability.
Round up your friends, join the discussions and learn practical self-defence tips on Thursday, 5 December 2019.
