First Thursdays is a monthly cultural experience centred around a walkable programme of art galleries, retail stores, restaurants and bars, taking place in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. First Thursdays was started in Cape Town in 2012 and in Johannesburg in 2015, and is owned and coordinated by First Thursdays South Africa.
There are two aspects to participating in First Thursdays as a gallery, restaurant, bar or other type of venue or event. One aspect is to feature in each month's programme, which we communicate and promote to an audience of over 10 000 people on our website and mailing list, and over 50 000 people on Instagram and Facebook. The other aspect is to contribute to the work that goes into the ongoing management and development of the First Thursdays initiative, which collectively benefits most businesses within active First Thursdays districts.

We suggest this option for businesses and venues that participate in First Thursdays on a regular basis. It includes being featured on the quarterly First Thursdays print maps, along with a listing on the web programme, updated monthly, and consideration for featuring in each month's highlights.

Participation in First Thursdays and listing on the official programme is broken up into two types: seasonal and monthly. This is valid for both Cape Town (CBD and East city) and Johannesburg (Braamfontein, Rosebank and Maboneng).
