6 Spin Street Restaurant Gallery is situated in a beautiful Sir Herbert Baker building facing historic Church Square. It is a restaurant, event and gallery space, exhibiting solo and group shows.
The exhibition Light from Dark is a dialogue between the work of master etcher Alma Vorster and a group of artists working with print in diverse ways.
The title of this exhibition is associative, not only for its spiritual and redemptive qualities, but also as the way in which images may be shaped in printmaking. Whereas additive processes such as lithography and hardground etching use a black mark to define space and form, mezzotint and reductive monoprint generate an initially entirely black surface from which, over time, form is drawn out by light. As the surface ink is diminished, tonal value and visibility is added. The image emerges out of darkness.
The exhibition features work by Johann Booyens, Laurel Holmes, Noeleen Kleve, Janet Mbirimi, Natasha Norman, and Yolanda Warnich.
