The A4 Arts Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the arts in Southern Africa. A4 is grounded by an understanding of art as a reciprocal resource, a catalyst for innovation, and a medium of collectivity.
Configured within a three-storey warehouse on Buitenkant Street in Cape Town, the A4 Arts centre hosts a gallery and project space, as well as a multimedia library.
An exhibition curated by Bhavisha Panchia
How we listen determines what we hear. This is the central proposition of a new project curated by Bhavisha Panchia opening at A4 this Thursday the 6th of June.
Through a diverse set of artistic approaches, this project draws attention to the histories, conditions, and subjective experiences that inform practices of listening. Record albums, podcasts, web releases, along with installations and sculpture, examine the poetic, speculative and critical capacity of sound and listening.
Featuring works by Vivian Caccuri, Chris Chafe, Nick Cave, Jared Ginsburg, Kyle Morland, Andrew Pekler, Robin Rhode, Sahel Sounds, and Jenna Sutela, in addition to a selection of podcasts from Phantom Power and audio media from Nothing to Commit Records, Sounding the Void, Imaging the Orchestra V.1 invites the question:
What generative opportunity lies in the act of tactful listening?
