Against the Grain is a quaint coffee house situated amidst the colourful community of the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood. Known for good coffee and authentic food with a traditional twist, it boasts a warm, welcoming cultural experience.
'The Places That Long For Us' by Nuraan Nicholas explores the intrapersonal relationship with memory loss and longing experienced by the artist over the covid pandemic. There is a strong dissolving of colour and lines which distorts original landscapes into an incessant blend of melting imagery, symbolising the fusion of memories of the outside world that the artist attempted to remember but couldn’t, a universal feeling experienced by a global community.
“Hope can be found in the darkest of places” is an idea the artist wanted to express through vibrant colour usage and expressive strokes which adds a playful element to a rather sombre experience.
