Chandler House is a small design studio and shop located in the heart of Cape Town’s bustling CBD. The 18th century Cape Georgian building houses both the Voorkamer Gallery and the shop itself. Monthly exhibitions take place in the Voorkamer Gallery whilst the shop is filled with locally-made homeware, artisanal gifts, antiques, textiles and a wide selection of fine art.
Chandler House is the brainchild of Michael Chandler who opened the shop doors in December of 2013. What began as a platform for showcasing his designs soon grew to include other Cape artists and makers.
Chandler House is delighted to be hosting the third solo exhibition by painter Oliver Scarlin in the Voorkamer Gallery.
Following from his sell-out exhibition, 'The Painter's Plate' in 2018, Scarlin has introduced narrative to his domestic still-life works by adding everyday items such as keys, napkins and seashells. The artist has admitted that this is his most personal body work to date and if you know what to look for, you can gain an insight into the artist's world.
In the past year Scarlin has moved into a sea-side apartment with his long-distance partner Harry. Their new home also houses his new studio where these works were painted. The exhibition 'fruition' is more than a collection of traditional still-life works, but rather a humble celebration of the artist's passions which have all come together in his domestic space, work and life.
