From the shores of Hawaii to the streets of Cape Town. South Africa’s first poke bar and take away. Good food, good times!
This First Thursday, will see a natural wine takeover at No.1 Church St, the OG of Hokey Poke. The evening will be a celebration of all things natural. Led by Mphumi Ndlangisa (Magna Carta Wines), Kurt Hill (Cape Fish) and along with a new concept from Hokey Poke called Honeyblood. Pierre Estienne will be spinning vinyl all night long.
The event was born out of a conversation between Mphumi Ndlangisa and Hokey Poke that concluded in the fact that natural food needs natural wine.
Natural wine has started taking the world by storm and has become an obsession in cities such as Paris, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Rome. Some of the hottest young chefs and restaurants have started adopting natural wine to pair with their creations and make up their wine lists. Pierre Touitou and his restaurant Vivant in Paris or Kris Yenbamroong of Night + Market in Los Angeles are perfect examples of this new generation taking to natural wine and all that it represents.
Natural wine is about young artisan renegades looking to express themselves creatively by pushing the norms and conventions of traditional winemaking. It is free from pesticides, free from sulphites or additives - it's raw and it celebrates the grape for what it really is. Natural wine is alive, abundant in undiscovered flavours and is drinkable in any and every setting. It is unpretentious and promotes extended socialising, free conversation and good culture. Cheers to that!
Tasting flight with food pairings available and natural wine magnums for sale on the evening.
