Vela Projects is a fine art gallery based in a 19th century building, presenting a programme that resonates with the global cultural landscape and champions the development of influential and lasting artistic careers.
Our Calves Demand a Wolf offers a cautious look at the consequences of ambition and technological progress, leaving viewers to ponder a world where humans and machines coexist, yet do not fully understand one another.
Schofield explores AI as both a tool and a muse, engaging it in a unique collaborative process. By feeding images of his hand-drawn works into an AI program, Schofield prompts the machine to generate new images, which he then integrates into his paintings. The result is a mesmerizing fusion of human and machine aesthetics, where figures and familiar objects become hauntingly distorted, their forms stretched, fragmented, and morphed into surreal shapes. Limbs twist and contort, caught in an unsettling vortex of flesh and machine, while vibrant neon colors clash with delicate ink washes to create paintings that feel alive, almost sentient.
Schofield’s paintings, with their surreal intensity and layered complexity, remind us that the cost of progress may be far greater and more unknowable than we anticipate.
The exhibition is on display from 25 October to 7 December 2024.
